Wednesday Season 3 Is Official—and There’s More to Come
Netflix has shared the first look at Billie Piper as a new character in Wednesday season 2. The British actress, 42, can be seen in a short preview playing the part of Isadora Capri, who is the head of music at Nevermore Academy.
Piper previously played Brona Croft/The Bride of Frankenstein in Penny Dreadful and has a long history with gothic and supernatural roles. The character of Isadora Capri is being described as “a former child prodigy and musical savant” who has taken an interest in Wednesday’s musical abilities. She also serves as the werewolf student Enid Sinclair’s (Emma Myers) mentor.
Netflix released the first look at Billie Piper on Wednesday as part of the bigger announcements on the future of the series. Wednesday first premiered on the streaming service in November 2022 and quickly became a worldwide sensation. After being viewed by 252 million Netflix subscribers globally, the original show has become the biggest English-language series on Netflix of all time. A second season was quickly greenlit in January 2023 and is now confirmed to premiere in August of this year.
Wednesday follows the eponymous main character, Wednesday Addams, as she attends Nevermore Academy. Played by 22-year-old Jenna Ortega, the show is a dark and twisted version of the Addams Family and sees Wednesday go to school with her supernatural friends and peers. Mixing gothic horror, macabre comedy, and teenage angst, Wednesday received an Emmy nomination and has since built a strong following of loyal fans.
Season 3 of ‘Wednesday’ is On the Way
In addition to the first look at Billie Piper, Netflix made another surprise announcement that Wednesday season 3 has been confirmed! While the upcoming second season was already in the works, the streaming service has now officially renewed the show for a third year. Wednesday is also currently in discussion with a spin-off series in development, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The details are currently under lock and key, but co-creator Alfred Gough gave a brief hint: “It’s something we’re noodling; there are other characters we can look at.”
The confirmation of Wednesday season 3 was welcomed with open arms by the show’s dedicated fans online. Catherine Zeta-Jones, who stars as Morticia Addams, broke the news in an Instagram post that reads, “When Wednesday comes, a better day. Wednesday season three. It’s official… we shall return.” Fans reacted with equal excitement in the comments: “And for many more seasons,” and, “I can’t wait to see the second season, I’m waiting for it with great curiosity… and the third is already official, fantastic news!”
Some fans pointed out their hopes that production could start sooner rather than later, so that fans do not have to wait as long between this season and the next. While Wednesday season 2 was announced in January 2023, it will still take over two years between seasons. A petition has circulated online, demanding that Netflix either pick up filming for season 2 right away or, at the very least, release an official air date so fans can plan for it. “I will be gripping the sheets in agony waiting, but please… don’t let us wait three years again,” one person shared.
Tim Burton, 66, is back on the team as an executive producer and director for select episodes. Burton recently collaborated with Ortega on Beetlejuice, a sequel to the 1988 cult horror classic directed by Burton and starring Michael Keaton and Geena Davis.
New to the cast, in addition to Billie Piper, are Lady Gaga, Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley, and Thandie Newton. Returning to the regular cast are Gwendoline Christie as headteacher Larissa Weems and Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams, Wednesday’s father.
As for Jenna Ortega, the actress has also stepped up to take a more active role on the production side. In the lead-up to season 2, Ortega made headlines over a podcast interview where she spoke of often having to “change lines” or “put her foot down” over character inconsistencies. The comments have since been backed up by the director, Tim Burton, who defended Ortega by noting her words were taken out of context. Co-creator Alfred Gough also added that Ortega’s new producer title was not out of place, as she had been heavily involved in the show’s creative side, offering her script notes and feedback along the way.
Joanna Lumley, who is one of the other new cast members, also spoke about how honored she was to be joining the Wednesday universe: “There’s always something thrilling about working for Tim Burton. His whole mind takes him to a different world, and the world that they’ve created here for Wednesday and Nevermore and the family is just intoxicating.”
Billie Piper has now been officially recruited for Wednesday season 2, and the show has received its first renewal for a third season. In the meantime, fans will have to wait until August to see what the Gothic Academy has planned for them next.
