Nine teens were arrested in Florence County, South Carolina, over the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy last month. Trey Dean Wright of Johnsonville, South Carolina, was shot to death in the parking lot of a gas station on June 24, according to officials. The shooting was “over a girl,” according to the Sheriff’s Office, and at least part of the crime was captured on a video.
Wright’s body was found on First Neck Road by Florence County Sheriff’s Office deputies the day of the shooting. He had been shot multiple times, and the road where Wright was discovered is a rural area about 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach. On June 25, 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway was arrested and accused of shooting Wright during an argument. Raper allegedly went to the location armed, intending to cause harm, following a verbal altercation.
A significant development in the case occurred later that month, as Raper’s accomplices were arrested on suspicion of murder after officials said the group of teens helped set him and Wright up for the shooting. Raper has been charged with murder, and three additional young adults were charged with that crime, as well as other offenses, in connection with the case.
Investigators with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office believe Raper “was not alone” when he shot and killed Wright. The Sheriff’s Office released the names of nine additional suspects, all teenagers, on July 13, 14, and 18. According to investigators, the teenagers helped Raper “coordinate and facilitate” the killing of Wright, with some meeting Wright at the gas station and walking him over to Raper after meeting with him there.
Wright’s mother, Ashley Lindsey, said it has been difficult for her to process what has happened to her son. “All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy,” Lindsey told Fox News Digital. “I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”
One of the teens arrested in connection with the shooting was Wright’s girlfriend, 17-year-old Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach. Kistenmacher was charged as an accessory before the fact, accused of bringing Raper to the gas station where Raper was waiting for Wright. Prosecutors believe she was aware of Raper’s plans and that the shooting could occur.
Florence County Sheriff’s Office Major Michael Nunn said Kistenmacher and others “were complicit in bringing the armed codefendant, Raper, to the incident location and knowing that there would be a confrontation,” Nunn said. “They knew that Raper had presented a firearm to the victim and made threats to shoot him, according to the arrest warrants.”
South Carolina prosecutors can charge minors as adults, so officials said Wright’s friends are being tried as adults. Prosecutors are charging the teens based on a legal concept known as “the hand of one is the hand of all,” according to Nunn.
WBTW reported that 18-year-olds Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso and 17-year-old Sydney Kearns, all from the Myrtle Beach area, were arrested and charged with murder on July 22. That means Raper and Kendall are the only two of the 10 suspects that the state has charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of Trey Wright.
Florence County Sheriff T.J. Joye told reporters that there was “a problem between them,” which he and prosecutors say is the root cause of the crime. “They had issues with each other, and it was over a female,” Joye said. “The sad thing is, you’ve got a 16-year-old who lost his life. You’ve got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?”
Raper is being held without bond after being charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Kendall, who is also charged with murder, is also in custody with no bond. Belviso and Kearns each made $20,000 surety bonds last week and were released on bond. No additional information was provided by the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, which said the investigation is ongoing. Prosecutors declined to comment on the matter.
Wright’s mother has taken to social media to grieve over her son’s death. She and her family have been faced with the fact that the suspected shooter will spend the rest of his life in prison after killing Wright, but Wright’s girlfriend and several of his friends were also involved in the crime. The case has also raised questions in the community about teenage altercations, peer pressure, and gun access in South Carolina.
