Virginia Department of Fire Programs Launches New Risk Dashboard

The Virginia Department of Fire Programs (VDFP) has introduced the state's first statewide Community Risk Assessment Dashboard. Designed as a public-facing resource, the dashboard brings together a variety of community data to assist fire officials and residents in determining where fire prevention and community safety efforts are most needed.

Features and Functionality of the Dashboard

The new vdfp dashboard provides access to emergency data such as emergency medical services calls, building conditions, and reports on potential natural or industrial hazards within Virginia communities. According to Sarah Kenny, VDFP’s coordinator of community risk reduction, the dashboard aggregates both current and past incident data—the latter spanning the previous four years—to help fire departments identify emerging trends and recurring patterns in their jurisdictions.

Empowering Fire Departments with Data

Kenny emphasized that the dashboard's integration of varied risk factors can be vital in shaping effective fire department risk strategies. She explained that information about areas lacking smoke alarms or those near industrial plants can indicate elevated hazards, allowing fire officials to prioritize prevention efforts where they can have the greatest impact.

Guiding Resource Placement and Community Decisions

Beyond supporting fire prevention, the dashboard is positioned as a risk assessment tool to help direct broader community resources. For example, the data can guide decisions on where to build medical facilities by highlighting areas with higher frequencies of emergency medical services calls, according to Kenny.

Comprehensive Risk Categories

The dashboard draws from nine key categories based on National Fire Protection Association Standard 1300. These include demographics, geographic characteristics, building stock, public safety agencies, community service organizations, hazards, economic characteristics, past incidents, and critical infrastructure. This approach ensures a thorough understanding of all factors influencing community safety and hazard identification.

Supporting Statewide Risk Management and Response

For state leaders, the dashboard provides a unified view of local and statewide risks. VDFP highlights that this will help them better allocate funding, provide targeted training, and offer support based on verified emergency data from communities across Virginia.

Launch Coincides with Fire Safety Week

The release of the Community Risk Assessment Dashboard coincides with Fire Safety Week. This year’s focus is on increasing awareness about the safe use, charging, and recycling of lithium-ion batteries, acknowledging a rise in related fire incidents noted by the National Fire Protection Association. Kenny pointed out that the dashboard’s long-term collection of data is especially helpful for tracking and responding to such evolving risks.

Public Access and Prevention Efforts

Residents can access the dashboard via the VDFP website to learn more about local risks. Kenny stressed that fire prevention and risk reduction are collective responsibilities, urging individuals as well as firefighters and first responders to use the information for proactive safety measures.
