Free Halloween Celebration at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture
This October, families looking for festive fun in Richmond have a special opportunity to celebrate Halloween at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC). On Friday, October 23, from 4 to 7 p.m., the museum will host its fourth annual Trick or Treat event, offering free admission, candy, and a range of activities designed for people of all ages.
Trick or Treat Event Returns for Its Fourth Year
The event, held on Arthur Ashe Boulevard, features more than 30 local nonprofit partners who will set up spooky trick-or-treat stations throughout the museum. Children are welcome to come in costume and collect candy and other giveaways at each table, while families can enjoy unique Halloween-themed activities.
"We always try to do it the week before Halloween to give families that incentive to like get double use out of those Halloween costumes," said Sam Florer, VMHC's director of public programs.
Family Halloween Activities and Entertainment
The evening lineup includes crafts, games, a Halloween band, a bounce house, and a trackless train. Guests will also have the chance to see historic chocolate-making demonstrations, purchase food from a local food truck, or visit the museum's own café. All museum galleries will remain open until 7 p.m., allowing families to fully explore the exhibits during the event.
Featured Exhibitions: Barbie: A Cultural Icon
One of the highlights for visitors this year is the museum's newest exhibition, Barbie: A Cultural Icon. The exhibit explores Barbie's 65-year evolution and influence across fashion, media, and culture. "I would say our trunk or treat is unique because you have the opportunity to get candy and then to go upstairs into our museum exhibits for free, especially with Barbie: A Cultural Icon on display. You know that's a huge hit with kids," Florer noted.
Candy Giveaways with the Mars Snacking Partnership
The event is sponsored in part by Mars Snacking, which is partnering with the museum to provide more than 50,000 pieces of candy for families to enjoy. Sam Florer emphasized the community focus, saying, "We are providing a safe opportunity for families and kids to come and trick or treat to 30-plus different nonprofit partners." The event is designed to bring together the Richmond community and connect families with local organizations while celebrating the spirit of Halloween.
Participating Local Nonprofit Partners
The event brings together prominent regional partners such as:
- Children's Museum of Richmond
- Richmond Symphony
- Virginia Repertory Theatre
- Library of Virginia
- Richmond Kickers
- Maymont
- Richmond Animal League
- Poe Museum
- Virginia Department of Historic Resources
- VMFA
- The Black History Museum and Cultural Center of VA
- And more than 20 other local nonprofit organizations
Community Engagement and Access to Museum Exhibits
Last June, the museum welcomed nearly 100,000 visitors during special events like Richmond Sailfest and Illumination, marking its most-attended month ever. The Halloween trick-or-treat event is an opportunity for new and returning guests to experience the museum's galleries, family activities, and community spirit free of charge. As Florer said, "We want to be that place to provide that safe and free opportunity for people to come and get into the Halloween spirit with their fellow Richmonders."
