Fall Fire Season Begins Across Virginia

The Virginia Department of Forestry (DOF) has announced the official start of the fall fire season, urging residents throughout the state to remain vigilant and cautious. The season runs from October 15 through November 30, a period recognized by both the DOF and regional fire agencies as a high-risk time for wildfires.

Increased Wildfire Risk Due to Dry Conditions

According to the DOF, Virginia typically sees an increase in wildfires during both spring and fall fire seasons. This uptick is attributed to a mix of dry weather, low humidity, and an abundance of ground 'fuels' such as dry grass, leaves, and branches. The agency noted that ongoing drought conditions in many parts of the state could contribute to heightened fire activity this season.

Outdoor Burning Remains Leading Wildfire Cause

DOF officials have identified careless outdoor burning as the leading cause of Virginia wildfires. "An unattended yard debris fire or bonfire can quickly spread to dry grass, leaves, limbs, felled trees, or even the woods," the agency said in a recent release. With the abundance of dry materials in the fall, the risk of rapid wildfire spread is particularly elevated.

Fire Safety Tips and Prevention Measures

John Miller, Chief of Fire and Emergency Response for the DOF, emphasized the importance of wildfire prevention. "It only takes a few days of dry, windy conditions combined with these extra fuels on the ground for an escaped fire to turn into a significant wildfire," he warned.

Residents are asked to be especially careful with any type of outdoor burning and to take proactive measures to protect their home and community. This includes never leaving fires unattended, ensuring fires are fully extinguished, and being mindful of ongoing drought conditions that can increase fire danger.

Coordinated Fire Emergency Response

Throughout the fall fire season, DOF firefighters are collaborating with local, state, and federal emergency responders to monitor and respond to wildfire incidents. "Wildfires are extremely unpredictable and can start and intensify in an instant," said state forester Terry Lasher. He emphasized the need for communities to be prepared and to report any wildfire activity immediately by calling 911.

Staying Informed on Wildfire Updates

The Department of Forestry will provide ongoing wildfire updates and fire safety information throughout the fall fire season. Virginians are encouraged to follow the department’s social media channels and visit the DOF website for the latest information on fire risk and prevention efforts.

By staying alert and practicing fire safety, residents can help reduce the number of Virginia wildfires and protect both people and property during this critical season.
