Stranger Things Season 5 Kicks Off With a Time Jump

Netflix has released the first official trailer for Stranger Things season 5. Set to premiere sometime in late 2025, the episode is not only the fifth season but the series finale for the much-loved supernatural thriller. And according to the full trailer, things will not be a bit dull in Hawkins before the final episode.

Season 5 of Stranger Things centers around an extended animated tease of what to expect from the finale. All the signature colors and textures of a vintage Stephen King horror story are present. The Upside Down bleeding into Hawkins, bloodthirsty demodogs stalking the hallways in the darkness, characters with flamethrowers, and an action-packed orchestral score are just a few of the things fans can expect.

Fans can expect a more significant addition to the cast in Linda Hamilton, who joined the Stranger Things cast for Season 5. Her arrival with a big gun is a particular highlight in the trailer, with Hamilton clearly in full-on action hero mode and ready for a fight.

Hamilton joins a returning roster of familiar faces and a host of important regulars, including Amybeth McNulty as Vicki and Gabriella Pizzolo as Dustin’s girlfriend Suzie. Jamie Campbell Bower is back as Vecna, while other new additions to the cast include Nell Fisher as Holly Wheeler, Jake Connelly as Derek Turnbow, and Alex Breaux as Lt. Akers.

The footage also gives us a date for Season 5 and a general idea of how the events will unfold. Following the dramatic events of the fourth season, Stranger Things season 5 will pick up some time later, in the fall of 1987. The timing coincides with the third anniversary of the disappearance of Will Byers, the season 1 event that kicked off the entire Stranger Things storyline.

In a statement accompanying the release of the trailer, the official show description for Season 5 sets the tone for the upcoming story. Hawkins will never be the same after the Rifts were opened. Everyone in Hawkins, including the Hawkins crew, is on a single mission: To find and kill Vecna. But no one knows where he is or what he’s planning next.

Vecna’s already let his first demon out, and the U.S. government has imposed a military quarantine on Hawkins. As a result, they are determined to track down Eleven. Even Eleven is on the run as she’s left no choice but to go into hiding. Season 5 of Stranger Things airs in three volumes.

The release notes go on to paint a picture of rising tension in Hawkins ahead of Will’s third disappearance anniversary. The trailer makes this crystal clear: “There is a different feeling this year. You can almost taste the dread in the air. The last battle is coming, and this time the enemy is darker and deadlier than before. The only thing that can stop them is the full party, everybody.” Expecting full Stranger Things movies, fans won’t be disappointed. All eight episodes in the season will be feature-length episodes.

The trailer is packed with more hints and Easter eggs for fans to enjoy, too. Highlights include one sequence that mirrors the famous velociraptor kitchen sequence from Jurassic Park, right down to Lucas and the others ducking down on the floor. The whole thing is also peppered with familiar faces and a single emotional scene that hits especially hard in the feels.

The second Season 5 trailer for Stranger Things confirms that Eddie Munson’s gravestone was vandalized with the words “Burn in hell” etched on it. This is particularly upsetting for fans as Eddie Munson’s sacrifice in the Season 4 finale, though heroic and successful, has led much of Hawkins, especially his family, to believe he was a villain.

The death of Eddie Munson is still a raw nerve for many fans, and by many accounts, the most emotionally impactful since Bob Newby’s death in Season 2. Hopefully, Eddie Munson’s death and legacy will be cleared up, but even then, the sting of unfairness is something the audience can empathize with, even if the real Hawkins is eventually sympathetic.

The teaser for season 5 of Stranger Things also offers more details about the split-season release. Netflix has decided to release the eight episodes of season 5 in three separate parts, much to the likely consternation of many fans who are likely to prefer a full-on Stranger Things binge-watching session rather than the drip-feeding method. Volume 1 will be available to stream on November 26, 2025.

Volume 2 will land in time for Christmas 2025 on December 25. Season 5 finale and Volume 3 release on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2025, which is either a stroke of pure genius or depressing timing. So, buckle up, fans, because it’s the long way home.
