One of the five individuals charged in connection with the Shockoe Bottom shooting that occurred in Richmond, Virginia, will be sentenced to 25 years or less following a plea agreement. The incident, which took place on February 21, led to two deaths and several non-fatal injuries, prompting an extensive investigation and subsequent arrests.

Shooting Details and Victims

The mass shooting happened in the 00 block of N. 18th Street in Shockoe Bottom. Nine people were shot during the altercation, with two victims, 23-year-old Genesis Tamar Jones of Petersburg and 42-year-old Dominic Antoine Jackson of Henrico County, pronounced dead at the scene. Several others were injured but have since recovered from non-life-threatening injuries.

Suspects and Charges

Authorities charged three Henrico County men in early March: 26-year-old Drevon Jackson-Brown (brother of Dominic Antoine Jackson), 28-year-old Carlos Johnson, Jr., and 23-year-old Sha’quan Morris. Later, in April, 28-year-old Antoine Hockaday II of Henrico County and 28-year-old Xavier Thomas of Petersburg were also charged in connection with the mass shooting. The involvement of multiple suspects highlighted the complexity of the incident.

Plea Hearing for Drevon Jackson-Brown

Drevon Jackson-Brown appeared in Richmond City Circuit Court on October 9 for a plea hearing. He had originally faced charges of first-degree murder, malicious wounding, and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. During the hearing, the charge of first-degree murder was reduced to felony murder. One firearms charge and the malicious wounding charge were dropped, leaving him with two charges: felony murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. The charges against Jackson-Brown are specifically related to the death of Genesis Tamar Jones, who was killed by a gunshot wound to the back.

Details from the Court Proceedings

Court evidence revealed that the event began as a physical dispute between two groups of women, which escalated into gun violence. Jackson-Brown reportedly took a firearm from a friend and fired the first shots into the crowd. Jackson-Brown's defense attorney, Benjamin Shute, stated that others in the crowd were also brandishing firearms and making threats. While the evidence does not attribute the fatal shot that killed Genesis Jones to Jackson-Brown, he faces murder charges for firing the initial shots. The Commonwealth’s Attorney identified Carlos Johnson, Jr. as the person whose shot killed Jones. Johnson is currently in custody, awaiting trial in November for first-degree murder.

Sentencing and Upcoming Trials

As part of the plea deal, Drevon Jackson-Brown will be sentenced to no more than 25 years in prison. Judge Jacqueline McClenney is scheduled to deliver Jackson-Brown's sentence on February 19, 2027. Meanwhile, trial dates for three of the four remaining suspects are set to occur in November, December, and February 2027.
