Bank of America Supports Richmond Nonprofits with Major Grants
Bank of America has awarded $400,000 in grants to two Richmond-based nonprofits—Cristo Rey Richmond High School and CARITAS. Each organization will receive a $200,000 multi-year grant through the bank's Neighborhood Builders program. This funding aims to support workforce development initiatives and job readiness for students and adults in the area.
Cristo Rey STEM Students Gain Insights from a Technology Executive
As part of the grant announcement, Hari Gopalkrishnan, Bank of America’s chief technology and information officer, visited Cristo Rey Richmond High School on Tuesday. Students interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) were able to participate in a roundtable discussion and one-on-one mentoring sessions. Gopalkrishnan shared his perspective on how artificial intelligence is shaping careers within financial services and beyond, providing valuable career advice to students preparing to enter the workforce.
Neighborhood Builders Program Highlights Recipients
Both Cristo Rey and CARITAS were named as the 2026 Richmond Neighborhood Builders during a ceremonial check presentation held at VPM. Each organization not only received grant funding but also leadership training for both its executive director and an emerging leader within the nonprofit. This comprehensive support aims to strengthen workforce development and expand the reach of job readiness programs in the city.
Cristo Rey’s Corporate Work Study Program Expansion
Cristo Rey will use its grant to help cover operating costs for its Corporate Work Study Program. This initiative allows 205 students in grades nine through twelve to spend one day each week in a professional workplace—with participation from over 50 area employers, including local nonprofits and corporations. The program offers hands-on experience in entry-level roles, giving students practical exposure and skills before graduation. According to school leadership, the recent roundtable with the Bank of America executive provided students with further clarity on emerging technology trends and career pathways.
CARITAS Advances Workforce Readiness for Adults
CARITAS will direct its grant funding toward CARITAS Works, a six-week workforce development program for adults. This initiative provides more than 160 hours of training and focuses on helping adults overcome barriers such as past incarceration, homelessness, or recovery from substance use. CARITAS Works is designed to equip participants with the tools needed to secure gainful employment and achieve job readiness.
Community Leaders Speak at Check Presentation
The ceremonial grant presentation included remarks from several local figures:
- Victor Branch, Bank of America Richmond Market President
- Hari Gopalkrishnan, Bank of America Chief Technology and Information Officer
- Karen O’Brien, President and CEO of CARITAS
- Charleita Richardson, President and CEO of Cristo Rey Richmond High School
Speakers discussed strategies to help more Richmond-area residents access jobs that pay a living wage and highlighted the importance of workforce development through nonprofit-led programs.
Investing in Local Workforce Development
Through the Neighborhood Builders program, Bank of America demonstrates its commitment to advancing job readiness, adult employment, and workforce development in the Richmond area. By supporting Cristo Rey Richmond High School’s Corporate Work Study Program and CARITAS’ workforce initiatives, the grants are expected to have a significant impact on educational and employment opportunities for both students and adults.
