School Board to Decide on Redistricting for Overcrowding Relief
The Chesterfield County School Board will vote Tuesday night on a redistricting proposal aimed at alleviating overcrowding in local schools. The plan would reassign students from Cosby High School and Midlothian High School to the new West Ridge High School. The board meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
Redistricting Options Under Consideration
Three proposed options are being considered, each focused on reducing overcrowding at existing schools. Chief Operations Officer Reid Wodicka explained, "That's really one of the drivers in how we design the options and not only recognizing where the overcrowding is now but also we know there is future development." According to Wodicka, Cosby and Midlothian are the primary schools affected due to current and projected population growth.
- Option 1: Magnolia Green (449 students), Westerleigh/Summer Lake (293), Watermill/RounTrey peninsula (343), Wynwood at FoxCreek/Foxfield (173)
- Option 2: Magnolia Green (449), Westerleigh/Summer Lake (293), RounTrey peninsula (246), Hallsley/Newmarket (282), West of Woolridge Rd (246)
- Option 3: Magnolia Green (449), Westerleigh/Summer Lake (293), Watermill/RounTrey peninsula (343), Wynwood at FoxCreek/Foxfield (173), Hallsley/Newmarket (282)
Recent community feedback prompted minor adjustments to the proposals, though all three share the main objective of school redistricting for overcrowding relief.
Community Input on Student Transitions
Parents have voiced concerns that the redistricting process affects more than just classroom numbers, emphasizing the emotional impact on students who may face transitions out of their current communities. "It's not fair to the kids because this is due to over building in these school zones that are already overcrowded and you're punishing the kids for this," one parent said. Another added, "There are kids that are uprooted from communities, friendships, relationships."
Many parents are urging West Ridge High staff to focus on supporting relocated students during the transition, asking for efforts to establish a sense of community and belonging for those affected by the school redistricting plan.
Elementary Redistricting Plan Also Presented
Chesterfield County is also considering a redistricting plan for elementary schools, specifically to balance enrollment at Curtis Elementary School, which has reached 100-percent program capacity. To ease crowding, the district is looking to reassign students from Curtis Elementary to Bellwood, Wells, and Bensley Elementary Schools. These elementary redistricting changes are set to impact the next school year.
The school board will vote on the elementary redistricting proposal on November 10.
Decision Timeline and Ongoing Community Engagement
The school board's decision on these plans signals an important step toward resolving current and anticipated overcrowding within the district. The board is considering various aspects, including community feedback and the logistics of transitioning students and families. Ongoing engagement with parents and stakeholders remains a priority as the district looks to finalize and implement changes for both secondary and elementary schools.
Staying Informed and Sharing Feedback
Chesterfield County residents are encouraged to stay informed and involved regarding these updates. Community members can contact the local news outlet with their comments and concerns, ensuring their perspectives are part of the conversation.
