Smithsonian's National Zoo Welcomes a New Red Panda Cub

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia, is celebrating the arrival of a new red panda cub. Born in June 2026 to female Keahi and male Rocket, this female cub is the latest addition to the zoo's efforts in red panda conservation and breeding.

Details on the Recent Red Panda Births

This summer saw more than one red panda arrival. Shortly before Keahi and Rocket’s cub was born, another set of healthy red panda cubs made their debut at the zoo on May 29. These births are the second litters for both pairs involved, and both male red pandas have also sired cubs with other females. Last year, Keahi and Rocket produced a female cub named Kuna, furthering their contribution to the endangered species' population.

Challenges in Panda Cub Breeding and Care

Raising red panda cubs can pose significant challenges, especially for new mothers. Jessica Kordell, assistant curator of carnivores, explained, “Having both dams being relatively inexperienced moms, we knew going into it there could be challenges.” To ensure optimal conditions, the zoo staff moved the pandas indoors to air-conditioned spaces ahead of rising temperatures and elevated nest boxes to reduce stress for the mothers. In 2025, Sequoia and Mow Mow produced two cubs, but unfortunately, they did not survive, highlighting the complexities of panda care and breeding.

Help Choose the Red Panda Cub’s Name

The zoo's animal team describes the new female cub as bold and feisty. Now, the public can participate in the panda cub naming process. Three names have been shortlisted for the voting contest:

  • Dolly: Inspired by country music legend Dolly Parton
  • Pyra: Meaning “heat” in Greek
  • Dolpa: A region of Nepal home to wild red pandas

Members of the public can cast their votes for their favorite name until Saturday, October 17. The winning name for the red panda cub will be announced soon after the voting closes.

How to Vote in the Panda Cub Naming Contest

Panda Care and Zoo Conservation Efforts

The recent births and ongoing care for red pandas at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo underscore the organization’s commitment to wildlife conservation and endangered species support. Through breeding programs like this, the zoo hopes to raise awareness about red panda conservation and the importance of protecting these remarkable animals in the wild.
